WP2 Wet Gap Permanent Magnet Generator Development
Objectives: To develop a direct drive permanent magnet generator capable of operating in a fully flooded condition. The ability to operate normally with seawater or fresh water in the air gap radically improves system reliability.
Description of work:
The generator is the primary component of the power take-off system, and due to the inherent operating environment of marine hydro-kinetic systems reliability is at an absolute premium. This work package will develop a fully wet-gap permanent magnet generator which will allow seawater to flow through the generator’s airgap freely, by means of an encapsulated rotor and stator. Work Package 3 will work in parallel with this work package to develop seals to keep large materials out of the airgap. This innovative system will be the first of its kind for a marine renewable energy device. Proving the functionality of such a system will be a significant development for the entire industry. The project will look to experienced manufacturers of motors, and encapsulated machines at smaller scales to scale up their design to meet the needs of this project. ORPC Ireland will be the lead for this work package. This work package involves the procurement of a scaled up version of commercially available encapsulated permanent magnet machines to act as a wet-gap generator for a tidal system, the first of its kind for this application.
