WP4 Health Monitoring & Maintenance System Development
Objectives: Develop an advanced health monitoring system for the generator to reduce risk of system failure and increase time between maintenance cycles, and initial maintenance program development.
Description of work:
A health monitoring system will gather data to predict system failures in advance of occurrence. Due to the innovative nature of the wet-gap generator and inclusion of an on-shore variable frequency drive, the generator bearings and their seals will be exposed to operating conditions not experienced before, including exposure to seawater, and effects of high frequency switching of VFD IGBTs which may contribute to damage on the systems bearings. An advanced health monitoring package is important to advise operators when maintenance may be required, and it is vitally important that as part of this work package a clear maintenance plan be developed for the system. This maintenance plan will be developed by LYIT who are experienced in the development of maintenance approaches for wind turbines. To ensure the commercial viability of MHK devices operational costs must be kept to an absolute minimum. This requires a clearly defined and tested maintenance plan for each subsystem. This work package will be led by LYIT and will include six stages, outlined below:
Task 4.1: Health monitoring system definition.
Associated deliverable: D4.1, Health monitoring system definition report. Due month 3. Confidential.
Task 4.2: Data streams and sensors definition.
Associated deliverable: D4.2, Data streams and sensors selection and procurement. Due month 6. Confidential.
Task 4.3: DAQ system design.
Associated deliverable: D4.3, DAQ system design report. Due month 12. Confidential.
Task 4.4: Maintenance procedure development.
Associated deliverable: D4.4, Maintenance procedure document. Due month 18. Public
Task 4.5: Preliminary system testing.
Associated deliverable: D4.5, Preliminary system testing report. Due month 27. Confidential.
Task 4.6: Final system testing.
